Activities for ages 6–8
Simple soil experiments: "Shake test" — fill a jar with soil, water, and dish soap, then shake it and let it settle to see layers form. Discuss what they observe.
Soil sensory play: Sensory bin with different soil types (sandy, clay, loamy). Describe textures; discuss which feels best for planting seeds.
Story time with soil: Read children's books focused on plants and soil — e.g. The Curious Garden by Peter Brown. Discuss the role of soil in helping gardens grow.
Ecosystem dioramas: Simple dioramas of ecosystems with small toys, plants, natural materials.
Garden detectives: Scavenger hunt for different soil colours, worms, rocks, small plants.
Mini composting projects: Small classroom compost bin (leaves, fruit peels, soil). Observe decomposition.
Clay soil art: Mold sculptures from natural clay. Discuss how clay is a type of soil with different properties.
