3.C Trauma-conscious education
3-4. Managing emotional responses + handling unintended trauma
3. Managing emotional responses and trauma prevention:
- Acknowledge and validate emotions without dismissing or amplifying distress.
- Encourage open but safe dialogue — guide discussions constructively while preventing re-traumatization.
- Know where to seek help — local and national mental health resources, school counselling services, organizations specializing in trauma-informed education.
4. Handling unintended trauma responses:
- Pause and reassure — offer immediate reassurance and, if needed, a break.
- Provide supportive follow-up — check in privately.
- Monitor non-verbal cues — drastic changes in eating habits or appearance must be investigated.
- Refer to professional support — counsellors, psychologists, external mental health professionals.
- Reflect and adjust — modify lesson plans based on student feedback.
- Communicate with parents if significant distress occurs.
- Plan follow-up activities that support emotional regulation — physical movement, relaxation exercises, embodied practices.
